About this artwork:
“ThemLiberty” (working title) was inspired by Liberty Enlightening the World, the 1886 colossal sculpture popularly known as the Statue of Liberty or Lady Liberty and recognized around the world as an icon of freedom, inclusion, democracy, and the United States…and an enduring symbol of welcome to immigrants. Conceptualized by ACLUF-SDIC Digital Media Strategist Ernesto Gonzalez in collaboration with the affiliate’s communications department, and co-created with award-winning artist, Anthony Washington, ThemLiberty is a vibrant, contemporary personification of liberty, not on a pedestal, but actively engaged in the persistent struggle to resolve intersectional and deeply-rooted inequities that deny the full measure of civil rights and freedoms guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights to every person within our borders.
