SAN DIEGO – Please attribute the following statement to Norma Chavez-Peterson, executive director of the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties, speaking on behalf of the three California ACLU affiliates, with regards to Governor Gavin Newsom’s reassignment of National Guard troops from the state’s southern border:
“The Trump administration’s inept, unjust policies have caused the unnecessary suffering of families who are exercising their legal, human right to seek safety and protection from persecution and violence in their homelands. Governor Newsom’s action is in keeping with the ACLU of California’s deeply-held belief that asylum-seekers be treated humanely and fairly. We commend the governor for standing for California’s values and against the administration’s blatantly racist, anti-immigrant agenda.”
