Californians’ right to bodily autonomy—to make decisions over one’s own life and future—is a deeply held value in our diverse state. This includes the right to abortion.
On January 12, 2022, the ACLUF-SDIC sent a letter to the Imperial County Board of Supervisors in response to community concerns about the lack of language access during board meetings for people who do not speak English.
The sheriff’s department’s ongoing voluntary entanglement with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) does the opposite. The sheriff’s department routinely, directly and indirectly, transfers county residents into immigration custody.
The right to petition one’s government is a constitutionally protected right. This is because public engagement and robust debate are essential to a healthy democracy. Therefore, it is imperative that our public meeting rules do not undermine the people’s right to participate.
