Immigrants with mental disabilities face a system which does not provide access to government appointed counsel or a court system which is adequately prepared to deal with their disabilities. Out of these deficiencies arise constitutional and access to justice concerns currently being addressed nationally.

The ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties is cosponsoring a panel discussion to address this developing area of law from the legal and medical standpoint, and to talk about current litigation aimed at protecting the mentally ill.

An estimated 57,000 individuals are detained annually.
