Flood Resource Guide

On January 22, 2024, heavy rains caused catastrophic flooding and damage throughout multiple communities in San Diego County. Below is a list of resources available to residents who need assistance.

Storm Relief Information:

• Sign-up for AlertSanDiego:
  • Text HELP to 98266 to get safety information delivered directly to your phone.
• Get help with food, legal assistance, shelter, utilities, mental health services and more at alertsandiego.org/en-us/recovery.
• City of San Diego Storm Response & Recovery Resources, for safety tips, shelter information, and other important information.
• City of San Diego Storm Preparedness, for resources to prepare for emergencies, includes information on where to obtain sandbags in your district.
• Ready San Diego is a resource website for emergency preparedness in San Diego County.
• Ready (Federal) is a federal campaign that educates and empowers Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters.
• Flood Preparedness is a California Department of Water Resources page to help residents prepare for a flood.

Full-service Temporary Shelters, including meals, showers and beds – pets allowed: (Reach out directly for current availability)

• Balboa Park Municipal Gymnasium located at 2111 Pan American Plaza.
• The American Red Cross is currently responding to assist those impacted by storms throughout San Diego County. Please find its latest storm response information here.
  • Jackie Robinson Family YMCA located at 151 YMCA Way – for showers and basic supplies.
• Lincoln Senior High School – American Red Cross Southern CA – located at 4777 Imperial Ave.

Car and Debris Clean-up:

• Environmental Services Department, report flooding or clogged City storm drains on Get It Done app or call 619-527-7500
• Free vehicle removal/recycling: contact Gerardo Vargas, 619-507-2129 or email Gerardo.Vargas@sdcounty.ca.gov
• Locate a Vehicle: If you are a resident attempting to locate your vehicle due to the storm on January 22, please visit https://www.sandiego.gov/police/services/vehicle-impounds-towing.

Public Transportation:

• MTS is currently offering free or reduced cost tickets for youth and elders.
  • Many riders using an SDM or Youth transit pass have temporary approval for that reduced/free fare until June 30, 2024. In order to keep riding with a reduced fare pass, riders will need to provide proof of age (senior or youth) or eligibility to MTS prior to June 30.
  • Riders can apply online through RidePRONTO.com, in-person at the MTS Transit Store or attend an upcoming transit center pop-up event. In addition, MTS is looking to partner with schools, social service providers and community organizations to host events. If you are interested in working with MTS to host a verification event, please complete this form.

Emergency Funding:

• City of San Diego is offering a Business Emergency Response & Resilience Grant. Application period opens in mid-February.
• The San Diego Flood Response Fund through San Diego Foundation will go toward nonprofits helping San Diegans impacted by the flood.
• San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce will provide grant funding and technical assistance to businesses affected by the recent flooding in District 4, which encompasses most of southeast San Diego, including Encanto, Mountain View, Skyline and Lincoln Park.

Additional Services and Resources:

• The San Diego Housing Commission has provided a directory of resources for those who need it.
• Residents can call 2-1-1 for health, social, community and disaster information and referrals for individuals and families throughout San Diego County.
• Check your insurance coverage – most homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage or losses from flooding. If you’re not insured against flood, contact your agent or visit Flood Smart.
• Mold Cleanup and Remediation Information can be found here, as well as fact sheets and other resources from CDC and EPA on mold cleanup, removal and remediation.
• SDG&E Storm Recovery Resources & Assistance provides information including payment help for those impacted by the storm.
