Amid ongoing federal actions affecting civil rights nationwide, the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties (ACLU-SDIC) is launching EmpowerEd: an educational series that provides the public with information on their rights, advocacy tools, and knowledge about existing laws and systems.

EmpowerEd is a three-track series that runs from January to September. Participants will learn about their rights and explore how policing, education, housing and immigration issues are often rooted in inequitable policies that harm communities across San Diego and Imperial counties.

EmpowerEd combines legal and policy education with organizing and advocacy tools, offering practical guidance to support informed civic engagement.

The series will kick off on Thursday, January 29, with a Know Your Rights session “Your Rights During Police Encounters” as part of the advancing justice track of the EmpowerEd series.

Nalini Gupta, policy director for the ACLU-SDIC, said,

“The ACLU-SDIC’s vision is a public equipped to recognize injustice, challenge systems that violate our rights and organize collectively to create lasting change. As federal actions continue to impede our rights and tear apart our communities, there is a pressing need for spaces where people can learn together and build power. EmpowerEd is designed to meet this need. It examines how oppressive systems operate, who they benefit and who they harm. It provides participants with the knowledge to understand their rights, challenge harmful policies and build power. With this knowledge, attendees will be better prepared to engage, advocate, and hold institutions and governments accountable.”

The ACLU-SDIC invites the public to participate in the EmpowerEd series. Registration for all sessions in the first track is available at: bit.ly/EmpowerEd-AJ. Sessions will be available in English and Spanish languages. To learn more about EmpowerEd, visit: bit.ly/ACLU-EmpowerEd. Additional tracks will be announced soon.
